Nine New African Objects on View

February 2007

Ralph and Jo Wickstrom have lent the museum nine fascinating African objects that will be on view in the niche case between galleries seven and eight for the entire spring semester. The loan was facilitated by UW–Madison professor of African art Henry Drewal for his students to study — the public will find them intriguing as well.

Two of the objects are made by the Yoruba peoples; other African cultures represented are the Fungom, Mumuye, Pende, Senufo, Zulu, Nbaka, and Ngala. The objects come from Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, and Democratic Republic of Congo and include weapons such as an executioner's sword and a throwing knife, ceremonial masks and ritual objects, and artist's tools.
