Petra Blaisse to speak at the Chazen Museum of Art

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 8, 2009
Petra Blaisse is an internationally known textile artist, landscape designer, and founder of the Amsterdam studio Inside Outside. During the next two years Blaisse will work with architect Rodolfo Machado to create a unique textile artwork for the lobby of the new museum building addition, which will open in October 2011. On Tuesday September 29, 2009, the artist will be at the Chazen Museum of Art to talk about Inside Outside and the studio’s philosophy on designing for interior and exterior spaces, with its focus on curtains and gardens. The artist talk is at 5:30 p.m. in room L140 of the Elvehjem Building. Blaisse started as a freelance designer of architectural installations, and gradually her focus shifted to the use of textiles, light, and finishes in interior spaces and also to the design of gardens and landscapes. In 1991 she founded Inside Outside. The studio’s textile, landscape, and exhibition designs address both technical and aesthetic concerns: light, acoustics, and climate, as well as artistry, utility, and beauty. Inside Outside’s approach is global, collaborative, and cross-disciplinary, and their projects continue to grow in technical sophistication, ambition, and scale. Recent projects include curtains for the restoration of the Hackney Empire Theatre in London (2000-2005); gardens, carpets, and finishes for the Seattle Central Library (2000-2004); finishes and curtains for the Casa da Música in Porto, Portugal (1999-2005); and acoustic walls and curtains for the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. In 2004, Inside Outside and a multidisciplinary team won first prize in the Giardini di Porta Nuova landscape competition with their entry “Biblioteca degli Alberi,” a new urban park for the center of Milan. Blaisse will design two curtains for the Chazen Museum of Art expansion, for the lobby and the auditorium in the new building. In addition to Chazen project, Inside Outside is currently working on several projects in Europe and the United States, including a curtain for the lobby of Banque de Rothschild, London; an auditorium curtain for Cornell University, Ithaca, New York; and carpets and an art installation for La Casa Encendida, Madrid, Spain.
