Recent Gift of Rare, Eighteenth-century English Ceramics Featured

Niche case between Galleries IV and V

This spring semester, students in Professor Ann Smart Martin's material culture seminar worked with Chazen Museum of Art staff to redesign the eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century English ceramics niche case between Brittingham galleries IV and V. The new installation features four recent acquisitions of rare, mid-eighteenth century Staffordshire wares gifted to the museum by alumnus Charles Vaughn. Professor Martin's class researched the new acquisitions—which include a redware punch pot, a salt-glazed teapot in the form of a camel, a leaf-form pickle dish, and an agateware figurine of a cat and kitten—and then selected additional examples of ceramics popular in Great Britain during this period from the permanent collection. The twenty-eight ceramic pieces in the case highlight a variety of forms and materials, providing an overview of the social practices and technological advances taking place in England at this time.
