Virtual Tour  Lower Level: Museum Storage & Work Areas

Art storage and workspaces are essential to every museum's operations. At the Chazen these are located on the lower level. The presence of a well-equipped workshop permits the on-site fabrication of professional-quality shipping crates and of pedestals and other display-related furniture and mounts as needed for exhibitions.

Since less than five percent of the collection of over 17,500 objects can be exhibited in the galleries at any given time, there are two art storage rooms: one dedicated to paintings, the other to three-dimensional objects. Because of the value and delicate nature of their contents, these rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art security and climate control systems that maintain constant temperature and humidity levels year round.

Besides being "safe," the art stored in these rooms must also be accessible for examination and study by students, visiting scholars, and museum curators. Class groups and visiting scholars can make arrangements to visit the storage rooms by contacting one of the curators or the museum registrar.
