Virtual Tour  Third Floor: Brittingham Gallery II

All but two of the objects in Brittingham Gallery II were produced between 1400 and 1600. Unfortunately, the developments typical of this rich period in European art are haphazardly represented. Of several notable works of art, the most outstanding is the large altarpiece from the church of Santo Stefano in Pane by Giorgio Vasari depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds. It is the most important painting by this artist in an American collection. Also worthy of the visitor's attention are the Mourning Madonna by Andrea Vanni, the Adoration by Giovenone, and the Lucretia Romana by Giampietrino. The Marys at the Tomb by Franz Franken II, although somewhat later (1625), is a very fine example of its kind.

Sculpture is represented by an English alabaster Pieta, a finely carved walnut Madonna and Child by an unknown Netherlandish artist, a marble tondo attributed to Benedetto da Maiano, and the popular Christ Riding a Donkey. Also important to this period are some medals from the Vernon Hall Collection on display in an adjacent niche-case.
