Brittingham Gallery VIII is generally dedicated to displaying the collection of Asian sculpture, although occasionally it is converted to temporary exhibition space. All of the objects displayed in Gallery VIII are from South and Southeast Asia.
The most coherent group here consists of sculpture, most fragments, from the Gandaharan period which spanned the 2nd through 5th centuries. Among them are found a fine Standing Buddha, a Seated Bodhisattiva, the Great Departure of Prince Siddartha, and a very finely carved frieze from the base of a 3rd or 4th-century stupa. Two red sandstone figures, Vahari the Boar-Headed Goddess and the Figure of Rishi exemplify the Gupta style of the 11th century.
Other objects of special interest include a 6th-7th century God of Wealth, a Dancing Ganesha of the 11th century, and an unidentified goddess of the 13th century. Two final figures deserving special mention are the Royal Figure Meditating on Naga from Thailand and the Cambodian Demon Head, which are on permanent loan from a private collector.
