What I do at the Chazen: I help maintain the day-to-day operations of the museum.

My Hometown: Wausau, Wisconsin

On Saturdays you’ll find me: Spending time cuddling with our orange tabby Maggy and working in the studio.

My alma maters: University of Wisconsin–Madison, MFA; and University of Minnesota, BFA

My college major: Sculpture

My favorite artwork at the Chazen: Untitled (1962) by Julius Schmidt, a cast-iron sculpture, is a compelling reminder of the medium’s rich history. Often referred to as the “grandfather of cast iron sculpture,” Schmidt was instrumental in bringing cast iron into the realm of academic art after World War II. His pioneering efforts in developing cupolas (iron-melting furnaces) and refining foundry processes laid the groundwork for countless artists and students—including myself.

As someone who has been casting ferrous and non-ferrous sculpture since 2003, encountering Schmidt’s work in person was both moving and affirming. His technical innovations and creative legacy have had a direct impact on my teaching and creative research. Seeing his sculpture not only celebrates the legacy of contemporary cast-iron practice but also reaffirms the value of hands-on, material-based education in the arts.

My favorite museum other than the Chazen: Museo Nacional del Prado

Last job before the Chazen: Postdoctoral Teaching Scholar in the Department of Art, Art History & Design at the University of Notre Dame, where I taught undergraduate courses in sculpture and foundry.

My college major: Associate of applied arts in graphic design
My hobby/pastime: Volleyball, video games, pickleball, and sewing.
What I do at the Chazen: Our team of VSAs aim to make sure all visitors feel welcome. We’re here to tell you about what’s going on in the galleries, the amenities that we offer, and give answers to any questions our guests may have.
My favorite artwork at the Chazen: I’m still getting familiar with all the pieces but so far, my favorite is Scottish Lovers by Daniel Maclise. I think it’s such a sweet portrayal of the couple and it’s got such a soft, tender feel.

What I do at the Chazen: Handle the art and prepare the galleries for exhibitions!

When I started: August 2023 (worked part time since 2018, left for 1 year in 2022, very excited to be back!)

Insider tips for visitor: Utilize the print room, get online and make an appointment to see as much of the extensive collection as possible!

Why I stay at the Chazen: It’s the most diverse, educational, and inspiring job I’ve ever had!

First memory of the Chazen/LVM: Coming to see the museum the first week I moved here for grad school in 2017.

My hometown: Toledo, OH

On Saturdays you’ll find me: Outdoors, making art, or hanging out with friends.

What I love about the Chazen: The education and inspiration it has provided me as an artist.

My alma mater: UW–Madison (graduate), Indiana/Purdue University Fort Wayne (undergraduate)

My college major: Studio Art/Printmaking

My favorite Chazen gallery and why: Not technically a gallery, but the works on paper study room is my favorite place to view work. It is such a great opportunity to be able to request to view anything in the collection you want and be able to get up close for such an intimate experience with the work. I frequented the print study room many times in grad school for research, sketching, and curiosity!

My favorite artwork at the Chazen: Francisco Goya’s Los Caprichos series

My hobby/pastime: Basketball, running

My creative outlet: making my own artwork (printmaking, drawing)

When I started: March 2023

First memory of the Chazen/LVM: Driving past Generations by Richard Artschwager in the backseat of my mom’s station wagon and thinking it looked like a page from a storybook I wanted to read.

My favorite museum other than the Chazen: Museum of the Moving Image

Last job before the Chazen: Post producer on a children’s game show for Disney+

My hobby/pastime: British television, drag shows, ice cream, and comedy podcasts.

Most unusual job: My first job when I moved to New York was at a high-end soap store where everything was made to resemble food. The amount of people that I had to politely inform on a daily basis that they had accidentally just eaten soap was a lot more than you’d think.

Any other question/answer you’d like to add: I recently moved back to my hometown of Madison after living and working in New York for 15 years. I am delighted to have landed here at the Chazen, be closer to my family, get to introduce my daughter to all the parks I enjoyed while growing up, and become reacclimated with cheddar in all its wonderful, various forms!
