Rembrandt van Rijn

The plate for this print wore out quickly, so the dark, fuzzy areas (called “burr”) in the lower left corner came out drier and more linear. Because early impressions of the print were worth more, some entrepreneurial owner painted in the burr of this impression to enhance its value.
