Ownership passed from the artist to his brother, Hamline Robinson, most likely upon his death in 1896. There is a gap in the provenance requiring further research until the painting enters the possession of Mary P. Oakes (Mrs. Francis J. Oakes Jr.) of Brookline, Massachusetts at an unknown date. It then passed by gift or inheritance to her daughter, Elisabeth Oakes Colford of Newburyport, Massachusetts. In 1968, the painting was with Hirschl and Adler Galleries, Inc. of New York, New York, for sale. It was purchased by an as-yet unknown private collector of New York, New York. In 1979, the painting was up for sale again at Andrew Crispo Gallery of New York, New York, and was sold to Baron Hans Henrich Thyssen-Bornemisza of Lugano, Switzerland. Upon his death, items from his collection were sold at Phillips de Pury & Luxembourg’s New York “American Art” sale on December 3, 2002 (cat. no. 56), where this painting was presumably purchased by Vance Jordan Fine Art, Inc. of New York, New York, who sold it to the Elvehjem Museum of Art [now known as the Chazen Museum of Art].
