Plaza Auction, International Art Corp.; Halvorson Gallery; by August 1975, Michael A. Feiner (Cleveland, OH); December 1977, gifted to the Elvehjem Art Center [now called Chazen Museum of Art]
This simple, brightly colored painting is divided horizontally into two main color fields. The top half is a vibrant yellow-orange, and the bottom half is a vivid red. The red field features two abstract shapes in solid black. The shapes resemble stylized arrows or mushrooms with tall, pointed caps. One stands tall and upright on the left, with a broad triangular head and a thin, elongated body. To the right is a similar shape that curves to the right, appearing to recline. Small white spots on the forms suggest eyes. Above, in the upper right of the orange field, is a small black crescent shape that looks like a moon. The forms have a playful quality, contrasting with the bold, flat blocks of color. The painting is signed and dated “Calder 61” at the bottom right edge.
