The Actor Onoe Kikugorō III as the Poet Sugawara no Michizane

Ukiyo Shigekatsu

This work by the artist Hokkei is a surimono or privately commissioned print. It commemorates actor Onoe Kikugorō III’s lead role as Sugawara no Michizane, a revered poet who lived in the ninth century. The embossed plum blossoms in the background reference Michizane’s crest. The poems and crest involve a play of words with the actor’s pseudonym Baikō, which sounds similar to bai, a Japanese word for plum.
