Adoration of the Shepherds

Adoration of the Shepherds

Francisco Camilo

Francisco Camilo was the son of a Florentine artist in Spain. The Adoration of the Shepherds, once in the collection of King Louis-Philippe of France, was first exhibited in the Spanish Gallery in the Louvre in 1838. Camilo's work is dark and gloomy, full of shadows. Joseph holds a candle (natural light) which is overpowered by the burst of heavenly (supernatural) light shining on the Christ child.
