Pieter Aertsen (attributed to)

It has been suggested that these two roundels are preparatory drawings for painted glass panels, similar in style to other such designs produced by Aertsen in the early 1560s. The strong emphasis on the outline of the figures and the circular outer border indicate the drawings’ possible function. Painted glass production became extremely popular in the Netherlands in the first half of the sixteenth century.
