W. Eugene Smith

Juanita was Smith’s daughter and a frequent subject of his earlier work – in 1946 at just two years old, Juanita, along with her older brother Pat, was featured in one of Smith’s best known photographs, Walk to Paradise Garden, an image that would cement its position in the canon of modern photography with its selection by Edward Steichen as the final image in his 1955 exhibition “The Family of Man” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1953, Smith published a photographic essay in Life magazine that featured Juanita, then eight years old, at home and playing with her brother Pat and younger sister Shana. She was also featured in the photo-essay The Endless Fascination of Water, published in the September 1, 1958 issue of Sports Illustrated magazine, to which Smith was a freelance contributor.
