W. Eugene Smith

This photograph is part of Smith’s Pittsburgh project, commissioned by Magnum Photos, for which Smith worked at the time, to commemorate the city’s bicentennial. Smith was only supposed to spend a couple months in the city but stayed there from 1955-1958 and amassed over 17,000 photographs, far too many for Magnum to publish. Although the planned book was never realized, Smith’s Pittsburgh photographs remains some of his most recognizable.
