Dox Thrash

While working at the Fine Print Workshop of the Philadelphia Federal Art Project, Thrash experimented with a new way to create the mezzotint ground by roughening the plate with carborundum (silicon carbide powder). He then drew his self-portrait into it with the traditional scraper and burnisher.
