James Jacques Joseph Tissot

Like the English mezzotint specialists of the previous century, Tissot takes advantage of mezzotint’s soft tonal quality to express sunmptuous textures. Tissot was primarily a painter, making this charming mezzotint all the more impressive. As is the case here, Tissot often made prints of his own paintings. These were produced in a variety of states, which suggests that he had a keen sense of a market for limited editions.
