Utagawa Toyohiro

Toyohiro headed the Utagawa-school branch associated most closely with landscapes. A refined artist and the teacher of celebrated landscape artist Utagawa Hiroshige, Toyohiro created many memorable landscape and figurative designs. In contrast to his teacher Toyoharu’s reliance on linear perspective, Toyohiro reverts to a more traditional approach, using bird’s-eye perspective and atmospheric cloud motifs. The “eight view” model is based on the Chinese Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers. Evening Glow at Ryogoku Bridge is from the Eight Views of Edo series, but the scene appears to be far removed from the city environs. The bridge nearly spans the entire composition and the design is void of major architectural details. The many diminutive figures hint at the bridge’s proximity to the heavily populated city.
