Utagawa Toyohiro

Toyohiro’s sparsely populated design stands in stark contrast to his teacher Toyoharu’s A View of Mimeguri. Though the bird’s-eye perspective and layouts are similar, Toyohiro’s design captures the desolation of a cold, winter evening. The two solitary figures walking along the bank of the Sumida River give limited signs of life in an otherwise barren landscape.
