Utagawa Toyokuni

Act V, Okaru and Kampei. After the ritual suicide of Hangan, Kampei had escaped with his lover Okaru to her father's house where they are married. This act of tile play and the following one lays out the tragedy within a tragedy which surrounds these lovers. This print concentrates on the domesticity of their life together, although Kampei's expression may indicate some of the responsibility he feels at having been chatting with Kampei instead of guarding his master at the crucial moment.
