Bruno Cassinari

In this portrait, Cassinari constructs the abstracted human form from a series of flat areas of solid, unmodulated blocks of bright color. The artist deviates from traditional naturalistic coloring and modeling of form but adheres to basic conventions to make the image recognizable: the sky is blue, the flesh areas are pink, and the hair is reddish brown. Thus, a correlation between the painted image and the human subject is preserved. The title, Portrait, implies that this is, in fact, the study of an individual, not just a generic image of a woman.
