St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata

Mateo Cerezo, the younger

Mateo Cerezo painted St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata in 1663. St. Francis (1181-1226) was praying at his mountain retreat in 1224, when he saw a seraph bearing a crucifix. In this painting St. Francis gazes heavenward in ecstasy as the rays of light from the seraph's wings pierce his hands and chest with stigmata corresponding to the nail-and-lance wounds on the crucified Christ. The celestial light illuminating the kneeling saint illustrates Cerezo's masterly manipulation of light and dark. This subject, popular in Franciscan churches, was painted several times by Cerezo.

This darkly colored painting depicts the figure of St. Francis wearing a brown robe with arms outstretched, gazing upwards towards a winged figure in the upper right corner. St. Francis has short brown hair, an unkempt beard, and wears a simple brown robe secured by a knotted rope tied around his waist. A shiny, white halo hovers above his head. He kneels on the ground with arms outstretched, his mouth agape in awe, as he gazes upward toward an ethereal light radiating from an angelic winged figure above him. The winged figure appears to break through the dark, turbulent clouds and shine rays of light down upon St. Francis, illuminating open wounds on his chest, upraised palms, and his foot. In front St. Francis, an open book sits atop a skull, both of which are shrouded in darkness. The background is dark with grey and black tones that suggest a dark, rocky landscape.
