Funerary Figurine (Ushabti)

Funerary Figurine (Ushabti)

Unknown

Ushabti, or Shabti, are small Egyptian funerary statuettes. These figurines mimic the mummified body, with the typical pose of arms laid across the chest, with later examples existing as portraits of the deceased. Ushabtis were often buried in large quantities, with some tombs held one ushabti for each day of the year. They served as substitute laborers, completing the menial tasks demanded by the gods in the afterlife. Ushabti figures were commonly inscribed with excerpts from the Book of the Dead or the name of the deceased they accompanied.
