According to inscription within the left oval, an individual with the initials M. W. provided funds for the work to be commissioned around 1656. According to inscription within the right oval, an unknown individual provided funds for the work to be commissioned around 1671. Unknown date, acquired by M. Hugo Oelze (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and in his possession upon his death in 1967; 24 April 1968, sold following his death at Paul Brandt (Amsterdam, Netherlands) auction “Highly Important Objects of Art forming the late Dr. M. Hugo Oelze Collection” (lot 85). In 1972, given by Mrs. Carol L. Brewster of Owings Mills, MD to the Elvehjem Art Center [now called Chazen Museum of Art].
