Marriage Chest (Cassone)

Marriage chests, or cassoni, were wood trunks often found in wealthy Italian Renaissance homes. They were associated with a woman’s dowry and used to store her trousseau—textiles such as linens or her wedding dress. Cassoni were typically either ornamentally carved, painted, and gilded.
