Pitcher (Olpe)

Pitcher (Olpe)

Unknown

Bucchero is the characteristic type of Etruscan pottery. To produce the distinctive black color from red clay, the pot is fired first in an oxidizing kiln, then the supply of oxygen closed off to form a reduction atmosphere. Vases were usually polished to produce the luster, and decoration was limited to simple incising.
