This funerary urn is constructed in five pieces and painted after firing with magenta, mauve, white, blue, and brown tempera. The cover shows dolphins, sometimes used in association with death. The main body shows the head of a woman with flowing hair and slender neck, possibly the deceased. On the right is a winged Nike.

Based on comparative examples, this vase was likely originally from Centuripe in Sicily, Italy. According to dealer Bruce McApine, formerly in the collection of a Mr. Salvestrini (Geneva, Switzerland). 10 July 1974, sold at a Christie’s (London, England) auction "A Fine Collection of Classical Antiquities: The Property of a Gentleman and from various sources" [lot #5]; purchased from this auction by "Turner". April 1976, sold by dealer Bruce McAlpine (London, England) to the Elvehjem Art Center [now called the Chazen Museum of Art]. [Last researched by Chazen staff 6 August 2021]
