Richard Cosway

This drawing is executed by one of the pre-eminent portrait miniaturists of the period. The delicate line and restrained application of color are typical of Cosway’s work. John Philip Kemble was the leading Shakespearean actor in London where he debuted at the Drury Lane Theater in 1783 and became the manager of Covent Garden in 1803. He is portrayed here in an unidentified historical role.
