Wallerant Vaillant

Vaillant learned the mezzotint process as an assistant to its inventor, Prince Rupert of Pfalz (1619–82), and his prints show the range of grey from dark to light that previous printmaking techniques couldn’t reliably capture. His output of more than two hundred designs in mezzotint helped popularize the method.
