Claude-Joseph Vernet

Although French, Claude-Joseph Vernet spent much of his career in Italy. Influenced by Claude Lorrain, he also specialized in painting port scenes and landscapes bathed in silvery or golden light. Sunrise was commissioned by the Duke of Bridgewater in February 1753 as one of four works (also a sunset, a landscape with waterfall, and a shipwreck) which were completed in 1759. His handling of sun breaking through a morning mist suggests to us the later 19th-century experiments with light and atmosphere.
