C. R. (Skip) Johnson

Skip Johnson, University of Wisconsin–Madison emeritus professor of art, created these lathe-turned wood sculptures for Bats and Bowls, a traveling exhibition sponsored by the Louisville Slugger Baseball Bat Company. Johnson—along with a select group of wood-turners from America, Canada, and Europe—was given a baseball bat blank made of ash, with the dimensions 4 x 4 x 40 inches, to combine with materials of his own specialty and inspiration. The waiter on a skateboard balancing a drink tray and the seated couple dining on a bowl of mini–baseball bats resulted from this exhibition project. The chef, toasting through the order window, was added to the series later.
