Untitled (1960-31), also called "Chain People"

Richard Peter Stankiewicz

Rusted chains, barbed wire, and twisted rasps or files drape over a boiler tank at the heart of this sculpture—one of Richard Stankiewicz’s “Chain People.” Stankiewicz first embraced such materials in the late 1950s after uncovering corroded metal fragments while gardening in his building’s courtyard. He subsequently sourced scrap from a local junk dealer. Many of his works from around this time reference entrapment, constriction, and bondage.
