Baron Samedi Honored in a Voudou Ceremony

Unfolding in the foreground of this painting is a Haitian Vodou ceremony honoring Baron Samedi, a powerful spirit who presides over the dead. Baron Samedi often takes the form of a skeleton, as he does here, but his presence is anything but somber. He loves parties, singing, liquor, and irreverent humor, bringing levity and mischief to the spirit world. Haitian Vodou draws on a wide range of West and Central African traditions, including those of the kingdoms of Kongo and Dahomey (particularly the Fon) and those of Yorùbá communities.
