Francesco de Mura

This painting is a study for a fresco on the ceilings of the new rooms of the Royal Palace in Turin (Palazzo Reale di Torino) commissioned from Francesco de Mura in 1741 by King Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia and Duke of Savoy. This scene was for the Gabinetto delle Miniature, the theme being the prowess of Achilles, hero of Homer's Illiad.
