Ribbed Teapot

Ribbed Teapot

Kato Keizan (decorated by)

This ribbed teapot with dragon-shaped spout and handle is one of the finest examples of Satsuma “dragon ware.” The body of the dragon is painted in flat red and blue glazes, while the scales are painted in raised white enamel using a technique called moriage. The signature at the bottom of this teapot indicates that it was produced under the auspices of the Shimazu daimyo, the feudal lord of the Satsuma domain where this style of ceramic was first produced.
