Long-neck Vase

Long-neck Vase

Kinkozan workshop

The main decoration on this vase is enclosed in two wide cartouches that extend around the body of the vessel. On one side is a pond with reeds and flowers; on the other a beauty of the Heian period (794–1185), recognizable by her hairstyle and shaved eyebrows, sits under a blossoming plum tree with two young attendants. Both scenes are embellished with gilt dots, commonly used on Satsuma ware to give the suggestion of depth.
