Hotoda workshop

This jar is decorated with Buddhist deities. The figures clad as monks with halos are rakan, the highest disciples of the historical Buddha. Often depicted in set numbers of sixteen, eighteen, or one hundred, rakan feature prominently in Satsuma ware bearing religious or mythological motifs.
