Covered Incense Jar

Covered Incense Jar

Kinkozan workshop

In one of this jar’s panels is a scene depicting a Japanese boy holding a rising sun flag, which was adopted by Japan’s imperial army and navy in 1889. Its presence in the decoration dates this jar to the late Meiji period, possibly after Japan’s victory in the 1894–95 Sino-Japanese War.
