Dance Card Holder

This lady's dance card holder combines thin leaves of ivory clasped together between silver covers decorated with flowers modeled in low relief. Attached to the cover by a short chain is a small cylindrical writing instument used to write names of dance partners. Some writing still appears on the leaves. The asymmetrical design of the cardholder and its floral decoration were both generally in keeping with stylistic tendencies of Jugendstil and also would have been a suitable feminine complement to a woman's formal ball gown.
