Tulip Vase

Tulip Vase

Ann Agee

This distinctly shaped sculpture is an extravagant homage to the tulip vase. The form brought together two pillars of global trade in the 17th-century Dutch Republic: domestic tulips and Chinese porcelain. Ann Agee decorated her 20th-century vase with images of a figure eating tulip bulbs—a reference to a family story about the famine that struck the Netherlands during World War II. The pairing poignantly underscores the stark gap between luxury and survival.
