Father David of Xenophontos

This icon shows a meeting in the Jordanian desert between Saint Zosimas and Saint Mary of Egypt. The two are among the most important ascetic models venerated on Mount Athos. Zosimas (d. 546) was a monk from Palestine who went into the desert to find the hermits who dwelt there. On his journey, he encountered a naked ascetic woman, Mary. She asked him to bring her communion on the following Holy Thursday, and he is shown here holding a chalice and a spoon associated with the communion. A closely related composition is featured on an icon from the seventeenth century in the Pantokrator Monastery on Mount Athos.
