Salvador Dalí

This color wood engraving is from Dalí’s series illustrating "The Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri. The scene represents the transitory canto in the section of the story about the "Inferno," in which Dante and Virgil encounter three giants, Nimrod, Ephialtes, and Antaeus, who stand between the eighth and ninth circles of Hell. Designed to emulate Dalí’s watercolor technique, the wood engraving visualizes the moment in which Antaeus picks up Dante and Virgil to deliver them to Hell’s final circle.
