Boats and Bars

Bertil Vallien

Many cultures tell tales of ships that offer passage into the afterlife. The mysterious symbols that fill Bertil Vallien’s boat evoke these traditions, encouraging reflection on life and death. Vallien created his sculpture using an innovative method of pouring molten glass into a mold of sand. For color, he applied metal oxides and placed objects inside the molten glass.
