Salmagundi Library Mug with Four in Hand Coaching Scene

Salmagundi Library Mug with Four in Hand Coaching Scene

William Jacob Hays, Jr.

The Salmagundi Club was originally founded as a sketch club in 1871. Members gathered regularly to socialize and critique each other’s work. They mounted exhibitions of members’ artwork and maintained a library. Between 1899 and 1924, the club hosted an annual fundraiser for the library where they hosted a dinner and auctioned off twenty-four mugs painted by members. The mugs were made by member and ceramicist Charles Volkmar. The mugs capitalized on the popular interest in hand-crafted decorative arts and often featured whimsical subjects.
