Edgar Degas

Later in the nineteenth century, artists like Degas combined mezzotint with etching. Mezzotint helps create the dark areas but also adds variety to the print’s textures. Degas reworked this plate several times before he reached this stage of the print, experimenting with soft-ground to achieve an atmospheric effect.
