Truman Lowe

Truman Lowe was a Ho-Chunk multimedia artist who emphasized knowledge of his cultural roots, environmental ethics, and natural materials and motifs in his artistic practice. For “Untitled #3 (Yellow),” Lowe wired an assemblage of four willow sticks––one painted blue––to the surface of a yellow sheet of paper populated with white and red pastel marks. At a young age, Lowe established connections to his natural and cultural environments while learning from his parents’ black ash basket making and wood carving practices. By continuing to collect and prepare natural materials similar to how he was taught, Lowe integrated an awareness of his environment and origins within artworks such as “Untitled #3 (Yellow).”
