Truman Lowe

Truman Lowe was a Ho-Chunk multimedia artist who emphasized knowledge of his cultural roots, environmental ethics, and natural materials and motifs in his artistic practice. In “Untitled (Wing),” yellow, red, and blue lines contour Lowe’s broad brushstrokes of black wash. Among Lowe’s pastel drawings over black wash, this work is unique in that the artist’s expressive brushstrokes embody a wing’s feathers. Alternatively, Lowe’s layered strokes of wash might be viewed as dark rainclouds, from which a wing, delineated with spare pastel outlines, emerges.
