Samuel Halpert

Modern artist Samuel Halpert is known for still life subjects, landscapes, and urban cityscapes, typically of New York and Paris. “Study–Sheridan Square” depicts a view that the artist returned to throughout the 1910s: Greenwich Village’s Sheridan Square at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and West Fourth Streets in New York City. Because the number “19” appears inscribed on this drawing after the artist’s signature, it is presumed that Halbert made this black chalk study in 1919, around the time he also made an oil painting of the same view. This particular study presents the block-like masses of the cityscape rendered in terms of light and shadow consistent with the black chalk medium.
