Samuel Halpert

Modern artist Samuel Halpert is known for still life subjects, landscapes, and urban cityscapes, typically of New York and Paris. This lithograph depicts the interior of Halpert’s rented Parisian studio at 6 rue Jules Chaplain, the former studio of eighteenth-century painter Jean-Antoine Watteau. Halpert’s wife, Edith, has just descended what Halpert called “the fine old staircase of Watteau’s period” and enters the apartment’s kitchen at the end of a sunlit hallway. This image is closely related to Halpert’s 1925 painting of a similar scene, “Woman in Doorway."
