Sam Moyer

Since 2014, when this untitled canvas was painted, abstract artist Sam Moyer has incorporated stone in her work in various ways. More recent compositions physically incorporate found stone and remnants of architectural renovation projects, often juxtaposed with painted surfaces intended to mimic the look of the marble, slate, and concrete slabs. This early work demonstrates the artist’s painterly technique in creating surface texture and pattern as camouflage. Her works play with the idea of weight, scale, and perception. “Sometimes I focus on the illusion,” the artist has stated, “But sometimes I feel like I’m trying to ruin it.”
